Earlier in my program I designed a university module for my practicum to be used by university professors for teaching different subjects. This module is part of the Kennesaw State University online modules associated with the Museum of History and Holocaust Education. The module that I created was called Disasters of the 20th Century. It focuses on disasters from 1900 to 2000 within the United States or involving U.S. citizens.
There are three basic types of disasters – natural, man-made and biological. I cover three different events for each type, spread out over the hundred-year period. I include a brief history of each, along with photos and video links. Then I ask thought provoking questions at the end of each event description. I also give a conclusionary section with general questions. Keep in mind that some of these disasters can fall into more than one category. For instance, Agent Orange administered in Vietnam can be considered both a biological disaster as well as a man-made disaster. Here is a list of the nine different disasters that I cover.
Natural
San Francisco Earthquake - 1906
Hurricane Camille - 1969
Heat Wave - 1980
Man Made
Titanic sinking - 1912
Winecoff Hotel fire - 1946
Florida Flight 90 aircrash - 1982
Biological
Spanish Flu epidemic - late 1910s
Agent Orange - Vietnam Era
Exxon Valdez oil spill - 1989
